라이언 일병 구하기의 상륙작전 장면
이 장면의 특징은 튀어오르는 물과, 흙, 피 등의 알갱이 하나하나가 다 보인다는 점이다. 카메라의 셔터의 개각도를 극단적으로 줄여서 필름 하나하나의 맺힌 상에 ‘흐르는’ 현상blurring이 사라지도록 했다. 개각도가 줄어들면서 생기는 노출부족을 매꿔줘야 한다. 이러한 조건을 충족시킴과 동시에 스태디캠을 들고 달리고, 광원을 확보하는 등 실제로 해보면 꽤 까다로운 작업이 예상된다. 하지만 돈 없고 장비가 없다고 못찍을 장면은 아니다. 공짜 조명기인 태양이 있기 때문이다. 필요한 건 오직 개각도 조절기능이 탑제된 카메라다.
개각도Shutter angles란 무엇인가?
동영상 카메라는 1초에 24개 이상의 사진을 찍어야 되기 때문에 셔터가 말그대로 샷다문식?으로 열었다 닫았다 하는게 아니라 저렇게 원반형으로 생겼다. (Rotary disc shutter 라고 부른다.) 원반에서 빠진 피자조각의 각도가 개각도다. 저 그림들에선 각각 90, 180도가 빠졌다. 저게 조절 가능한 카메라를 찾기 위해 유튜브에 shutter angle tutorial 라고 검색해보았다. 파나소닉 GH4와 GH5에 대한 영상이 줄줄이 나왔다. 바로 렌탈샵 홈페이지에 가서 가격을 보니 2~3만원이면 빌릴 수 있다.
중요한 것은 연출적인 의도를 이해하는 것이다. 물방울 하나하나가 마치 고체 뿌스러기처럼 보이는 이 느낌을 통해 스필버그는 우리에게 무엇을 전달하려고 했을까?
고민하지 말고 직접 물어보자...
In an interview Steven Spielberg said about this technique:
You can also see several explosions, and Janusz came up with the idea of shooting with the shutter open to 45 degrees or 90 degrees, which completely negated any blurring. Often, when you see an explosion with a 180-degree shutter it can be a thing of beauty, but a 45-degree shutter looks very frightening.
Cinematographer Janusz Kaminski said in another interview:
By applying 45 degree shutter, we are achieving certain staccato in actor’s movement. We are achieving certain crispiness of explosions. Everything becomes slightly, just slightly more realistic.
Spielber continued in the above interview:
I used a 45-degree shutter on the explosions, and a 90-degree shutter on most of the running shots. But we alternated at times. Sometimes the 45-degree shutter would appear too exaggerated and the 90 turned out to be better. But for extreme explosions like this, where we really wanted to practically count each individual particle flying through the air, the 45-degree shutter worked best.
그렇다고 한다. 스필버그는 45-degree shutter looks very frightening. 라고 했고 촬영감독인 카민스키는 Everything becomes slightly, just slightly more realistic. 했다고 한다. 나는 이느낌을 아크로바틱한 느낌이라고 말하고 싶다. 대장장이가 칼을 제련하는 장면, 연인이 서로의 뺨을 때리는 장면 같은 것에 응용해도 무방하다고 생각한다. 이런 식의 표현방식은 일종의 하이퍼리얼리즘이다. 개각도를 활용한 장난은 인간의 눈이 볼 수 없는 것을 보게 해준다. 서사적 장치와 잘 어울리게 활용한다면 라이언일병 구하기에서처럼 뭔가 상황을 극단적으로 보이게 만들 수 있다.
